If you have been using Young Living for any length of time, you’ve probably heard the name “ER” thrown around a bit. ER stands for Essential Rewards, the fantastic rewards program from Young Living. This program is a great way to earn lots of free product, and get discounted shipping. Did you see that word free and get excited? Well you should! With Essential Rewards you start out by earning 10% back in points on your purchases. After 6 months, you will earn 15% and after 12 months, you will be earning 20% back! These points can be spent dollar for dollar on full pv items. It adds up quickly, especially when you start hitting the higher percentages!
Another way that you benefit from being enrolled in Essential Rewards is through the monthly promotions. Each month Young Living offers Exclusive Rewards to those who purchase at the levels of 190pv, 250pv, and 300pv. If you are making this purchase as an Essential Rewards order, you get an additional free product. These change monthly and are always something really great that you don’t want to miss out on.
So how does it work? Essential Rewards is a monthly auto-ship program. Wait, don’t freak out yet! Yes, you are committing to place one 50pv order each month. However, you choose the date. You choose the products you want each month. You can change the content of your order every single month. You may also opt out of your order one month per year with no penalty. And, you can drop out of the program at any time. (Just be sure to use any points you have accumulated first because they disappear when you drop out of the program.) There really is no catch! You may redeem up to 350 points per month and points must be spent within 12 months, but we don’t think you’ll have any problem with that!
If you don’t think that you can commit 50pv per month on essential oils in your budget, think outside the oils box. When my wife first started using essential oils, I didn’t really know what they were. I actually thought that “essential oil” was one oil, like how olive oil is made from olives. I just didn’t know what essential oil was made of.
I soon learned that “essential oils” was a term for oils steam distilled from a wide variety of plant material from all over the planet. There was not one essential oil, but a whole host of different essential oils that do a lot of different things.
While skeptical at first, it wasn’t that weird. They are just oils made from plants. The Bible talks a lot about them and they have been used as medicine for thousands of years. I figured it was just one of those things we were rediscovering and putting back into use.
In the beginning I didn’t know what oils to use (and neither did my wife), but as she learned, she experimented on me. One of the first oils I used was Panaway, which contains methyl salicylic, the main ingredient in aspirin. Like aspirin, it helps take away pain, you just rub Panaway on where it hurts.
After complaining to my wife about my knee hurting, she started having me use Deep Relief. It’s a blend of peppermint, lemon, Idaho Balsam fir, copaiba, clove, wintergreen, helichrysum, vetiver, palo santo, and coconut oil in a convenient roller bottle. It smells pretty good and more importantly, my knee stops hurting. I’ve also used it on my lower back and any other joint that’s causing discomfort.
Later on we learned about an essential oil called, Valor. It’s nickname is ‘chiropractor in a bottle’ because of the way it can help align your spine, but it also helps give you a boost of confidence and can even help prevent you from snoring at night. I didn’t even realize oils could change your mood, but they definitely can!
When I got a stomach ache from eating too much pizza, my wife gave me some Digize to help my digestive system process all the man-food I had ingested. She told me to rub it in circles around my belly button. I thought that was weird, but I did it anyway and what do you know, it actually helped me feel better! Now I can eat all the man-food I want!
One night I was struggling to fall asleep (I probably was looking at my phone too much that night) and my wife asked me if she could rub something on my feet. She rubbed some Tranquil on my foot and boy, did it tickle, but within 5 minutes, I was out. I only realized that it had worked when I woke in the morning.
Every morning now my wife oils me up before I head out for the day. She starts with Shutran, a blend created just for men, four drops on my forearms every morning. She adds a drop of Citrus Fresh and Brian Power to my brain stem to uplift and focus me. And finally, she adds a drop of Joy over my heart to uplift me before I head out the door.
While essential oils were something new to me, I’m so glad my wife found them. I’ve really found a lot of help from them, and can’t imagine life without them.
I am a child of the 70’s. My parents were a little bit hippy. Add to that sensitivities to the ingredients in many commercially produced products and you get someone ready to start making her own beauty products! I’ve made my own deodorant for several years using health food store grade essential oils. It worked ok, but I was still reaching for the “chemical stick” come hot July. I’ve also tried most every natural deodorant produced and sold. Sadly, a lot of them ended up in the garbage. I had even less success with those. I really wanted to ditch the chemical laden deodorant for good, but just couldn’t seem to find what worked for me. I know I’m not alone! Almost everyone these days has heard about how toxic the ingredients in deodorant are, especially in regards to breast health, and many are searching for a non-toxic alternative that really works. Well, I’ve found one!
This past spring, I started using Young Living Essential Oils. Young Living Essential Oils are amazing! I was really curious how these oils would work in my deodorant. One day I read that someone likes to pop a roller top on her Purification essential oil blend and use it neat for deodorant. I decided to test it out and proceeded to rub a few drops on. Whooooo-wee! I was Purification fresh for days! It was a little too potent for me in direct application, but I was certainly sold on it doing the job well! I decided this oil blend was definitely going into my next batch of deodorant.
Now, there are two ways that I make this. The first is what we’re all most familiar with, a deodorant stick. Personally, I find my results to be a little hit and miss with this one. Not because it doesn’t work as well, but the texture of it can turn out a little odd. If you don’t cool it rapidly enough, the solids will start to settle which makes the top of your stick too soft, and the bottom painful to apply! The second way is to make it into a paste, keep it in a jar, scoop a little out and apply it with your fingers. At first I wasn’t ready to try this. It seemed so strange to rub deodorant on with my fingers. However, this is my preferred method now. Give it a try! If you don’t like it you can always warm it to a liquid and add the ingredients to make it into a stick.
Basic Deodorant Recipe:
2 Tablespoons Arrowroot Powder (or GMO free cornstarch)
2 Tablespoons Baking Soda (aluminum free)
2-1/2 Tablespoons Coconut Oil
24 drops of Essential Oils (see below for suggested blends)
Additional Ingredients for deodorant STICK only:
**2 drops of castor oil (optional – will help the stick glide a bit better)
**1 to 1-1/2 Tablespoons of Beeswax pellets (depending on the consistency you like)
For Deodorant Paste, measure out your coconut oil and put it into a glass (preferred) bowl. Add baking soda and arrowroot, using the backside of a spoon, or a small spatula (reserved for making your essential oil beauty products), mash the dry ingredients into the oil. When it’s almost blended, add your essential oils and continue blending until everything is incorporated. Another option is to melt your oil, but if you do that, you’ll need to put this into the freezer for an hour to solidify before any settling can occur. I like the softer texture of doing it without melting the oil as it’s easier to scoop out of the jar.
For Deodorant Stick, measure out your coconut oil and beeswax pellets into a double boiler. Stir often. When the beeswax is melted, remove from heat. Add in the baking soda and arrowroot and stir. Add in the castor oil, stir. Add in your essential oils and stir until incorporated. Pour into a recycled, clean, deodorant stick container and place into your freezer for about an hour. I like to place it next to a bag of frozen veggies or a soft ice pack to help it to cool off very quickly before any settling can occur.
Some notes: Always use non-reactive, non-porous materials to make your essential oil blends in. Plastics can absorb some of the essential oils and no matter how much you wash it, it’s going to smell like the oils and thus also flavor what you put in it next. While many of Young Living’s essential oils are safe to ingest, I don’t necessarily want my food to taste like my deodorant! So I make sure to use a glass (pyrex) bowl, and I have a rubber spatula that I use just for this purpose.
So now the fun part, the essential oil blends! There are many oils that people use in their deodorant blends. I prefer a fresh scent over a floral or spicy for myself. However, some women prefer a more floral or citrus scent, and many men prefer something spicy or “outdoor fresh” like Idaho Blue Spruce. Also, every body is different, so different oils and blends not only smell differently, but work differently for different people. Feel free to experiment!
My go to basic deodorant blend:
8 drops Melaleuca Alternifolia essential oil
8 drops Purification essential oil blend
8 drops Lavender essential oil
*All these oils are in the Premium Starter Kit, so you can get started right away!
A Spicy Woodsy blend:
6 drops Melaleuca Alternifolia essential oil
12 drops Melrose essential oil blend
6 drops Idaho Blue Spruce essential oil -OR- Christmas Spirit essential oil blend
Other popular oils for deodorant blends include; Joy, Ylang Ylang, Orange, Bergamot, Geranium, Clary Sage, Thieves, Lemongrass, Cypress, Lemon, Lime, Frankincense, Cedarwood, Patchouli and more. Experiment and find the perfect blend for yourself!
One last note. Some people are sensitive to baking soda, and therefore, this won’t work for them. But stay tuned, I’ve got more ideas for you in a future post!
There are many uses for Melaleuca (alternifolia), which is also commonly known as “tea tree oil”, but we wanted to boil it down to the top 3. This is a very popular oil and so as of right now, Living Happy Oils has decided to make it a part of their kit!
Apply 2-4 drops directly to your skin. Dilution is not required, except for the most sensitive skin. Test on a small area first. Use as needed. Keep out of reach of children. Consult a healthcare practitioner prior to use if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition. Irritant reactions and contact allergy have been reported infrequently and can be minimized by avoiding the use of neat oil and storing the oil correctly.
Secondary plant metabolites such as essential oils have been used throughout history for therapeutic purposes. The essential oil that is steam distilled from the Australian native plant Melaleuca alternifolia (Myrtaceae), also known as melaleuca oil or tea tree oil, is used topically for its known effects.

Peppermint oil is derived from the peppermint plant, which is a cross between water mint and spearmint plant. The entire plant contains menthol, an organic compound which provides a wonderful cooling sensation while it naturally alleviates discomfort.
According to WebMD, peppermint oil can be used for a variety of health conditions and can be taken orally in dietary supplements or topically as a skin cream or ointment. As always, consult with your physician before taking.
Some evidence suggests that peppermint oil may help relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and indigestion, but it may cause side effects such as heartburn and may interact with certain medications.
Peppermint oil is intense and far more concentrated than other essential oils. It may be necessary to dilute the oil with a carrier oil like almond or jojoba oil. Below are the uses for peppermint oil:
There are many ways to use peppermint essential oil: topically either neat or mixed with a carrier oil; internally as a tea or as an addition to water; or aromatically in a diffuser or in a steaming bowl of water.

Eucalyptus Blue comes from the Myrtacae botanical family. It is steam distilled from the leaves of the plant. Eucalyptus Blue is grown and distilled on Young Living’s farm in Eucador. It comes from a tree often called Blue Gum – a tree that has been crossbred over 250 years in the Andean Mountains in Ecuador. Blue Gum is a cross between Eucalyptus Citriodora and Eucalyptus Globulus. Natives of Ecuador use the leaves to disinfect and cover wounds as well as repel insects. Eucalyptus Blue is high in eucalyptol, but of it’s balanced constituents, it is the only eucalyptus found in the world today that does not cause allergic reactions in people with allergies to eucalyptol. This quality makes Eucalyptus Blue preferred over other eucalyptus species. Recent studies have shown Eucalyptus Blue have high antiviral qualities. It makes a great companion to Dorado Azul. Eucalyptus Blue is used to support respiratory function and aid in normal breathing. It also relieves sore muscles and is calming and invigorating.
White Fir hails from the botanical family Pinaceae. This plant originates in Idaho and is team distilled from the wood, bark, twigs, and needles. White Fir is anti-tumoral, anti-cancerous, pain relieving, and an antioxidant. It’s primary uses are for respiratory infections and as an anti-fungal. White Fir is not normally sold as a single making this an awesome chance to snag this wonderful oil. White Fir essential oil is found in Australian Blue, Grounding, Highest Potential, Into the Future, and Oola Grow.
BLM was created to support normal bone and joint health. It combines natural ingredients such as type II collagen, MSM, glucosamine sulfate, and manganese citrate. These ingredients support healthy cell function and encourage fluid movement.
BLM helps to build bones, ligaments, and muscles while helping the pain from arthritis. The exclusive blend of collagen and hyaluronic acid strengthens and rebuilds damaged joints and cartilage while battling arthritis inflammation and bone pain.
When children are stung, it leaves parents feeling helpless. Recently, a close friend texted me asking how she could use Young Living Essential Oils to treat her daughter. She had just been stung by a wasp twice and it was very painful. I suggested she try one drop of lavender and one drop of purification then put an ice pack on it. Within an hour, there was no more pain and no more swelling or redness. We were so happy to see how quickly these oils took away the pain! Are you ready to dive in and start using these oils with your family? The Premium Starter Kit is a fabulous way to start using your oils every single day. Find out more about the PSK here.
